It was a joyful reunion after being apart for three weeks! Bryan joined us this past weekend for his annual goodie-making day. He was so glad to be out of his apartment with newfound health and sweet freedom from his tiny domicile.
This year we chose an easy sugar cookie recipe to which we added red and green jimmies. After baking the small treats in small, colorful muffin tins, Bryan topped each with a peppermint or chocolate kiss.
As we baked, we ventured over to the unadorned Christmas tree. Bryan helped his dad string the lights and decorated the Fraser fir almost singlehandedly. Of course, Bryan put on his favorite Christmas CDs (we are old-school!) , conducting the music vigorously. I wonder who he was imitating?! After each selection, he asked me “Have you ever sung this with Choral Society?”
After the tasty morsels cooled, we put the goodies in decorative bags, filled out Christmas cards, and attached them to each cookie bag. Bryan made up the recipient list which included family, friends, coworkers, piano teacher, bus driver and those who work with him from Shared Support South.
Steeped in the Christmas spirit, his mood buoyant, Bryan returned to his apartment, laden with the fruits of his labor. He will eagerly distribute his treats and cards to those who love and care for him each and every day in the upcoming weeks Judging by the weight of the bag, that’s a LOT of people! Spreading cheer is what Bryan does best. And isn’t that what we crave this Advent and Christmas season?
“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” : 2 Corinthians 9.
