About twenty-plus years ago, Bryan and his Dad took a karate class together sponsored by Northampton Township. He really loved it but, with school, Special Olympics, and other activities, that went by the wayside.
When Bryan’s roommate suggested taking some karate classes at the same gym where he worked out, Bryan was all in. He had to do a trial lesson to see if the school would take him and he passed. After two months of classes with a great one-on-one instructor, Bryan just received his white belt. He was so proud of his accomplishment!
Why is he pictured on a kitchen chair? Because, as in all of Bryan’s pants, I have to hem them up considerably. Usually 4-6 inches need to be removed before hemming. After I rolled up the cuffs, Bryan stood on the chair and explained in detail why he needed to learn these valuable skills. ”Some kids were victims”, he stated. ”I’m learning all the techniques”. (to protect himself).
He then proceeded to demonstrate the opening lesson protocol. Pretending there was a gym mat, Bryan approached it, bowed, went on the ‘mat’ and took the knee. He explained that you always need to show the instructor respect. Then he showed the “reset” move and others, and yelled the voice commands he had learned.
Of course he’s all about the bag to carry his gear, the gloves, socks and uniform he wears each week. An important part of the allure.
So every Saturday morning, the white belt Karate Kid dons his apparel AFTER an hour of Special Olympics Track and Field practice. He learns more moves, practices respect, and enjoys an activity with his roommate proudly looking on and documenting the progress. What better way to start your weekend?!

Proud of his white belt!
