You’re never to old to learn new things. In June, a plea was voiced to the congregation where we attend church that new acolytes were needed. Bryan heard that request, went up to our Lay Eucharistic Minister that Sunday, and told her he’d like to serve.

Fast forward to July 5. Bryan came to church with us as usual, dressed in his red, white and blue Hawaiian Phillies shirt, shorts and flip flops. Not the best dressed. Also, he was in bad need of a shave. Nevertheless, he was approached as soon as he entered the sanctuary – “Would you like to serve as acolyte this morning?” “Oh SURE!” came his enthusiastic response.

Bryan jumped in with both feet, shadowing the Minister in such tasks as processing with the cross, lighting the candles, placing the Gospel on the altar, receiving the offering plates and extinguishing the candles at the end of worship. He’s learning to become a proper Episcopalian in the process – crossing himself and reverencing the cross at the correct times.

I chided myself at being embarrassed at his appearance that Sunday. Does it really matter to God if you haven’t shaved? Does it diminish your service if your attire isn’t totally appropriate? People were pleased that he was up there in front of the congregation helping the Minister. And, truth be told, we as his parents were bursting with pride!

He was asked this past Sunday to practice “acolyting” once again. Some day he will be able to do this on his own. But until then, he is learning how to serve the Lord. He sits up front and is a part of all the action. I’m glad he has found a way to be a part of the church he has yet to join. Bryan has expressed a desire to do so at the next new members class. Meanwhile, he has a important part to play, integrating him into a new Body of Christ.

His eagerness to serve is a source of pride for us, and for him. And, as his mom and dad sing in the choir, I’m glad he doesn’t have to sit alone in the pew Sunday after Sunday. That makes me sad.

I have to believe that his Heavenly Father is smiling when Bryan solemnly performs his new duty as he serves God in this special way.
